REVIEW: Blue Ginger is simply (Ming)nificent

Rachel White, Staff Writer

Celebrity Chef Ming Tsai not only hosts the hit TV series “Simply Ming” on PBS, but he is also the mastermind behind upscale Asian fusion restaurant Blue Ginger, in Wellesley, MA. Not only is the environment fancy, but so is the beautifully crafted food.

Guests approach a soothing water sculpture as they first set foot in the restaurant, and are greeted by friendly hostesses, who seat people as fast as possible.

Dimmed yellow lighting gives off a warm and relaxing vibe, which help create Blue Ginger’s peaceful ambiance. Guests can have a quick drink while waiting for their tables at the casual, chic lounge in the front. Diners can choose to eat at the 40-foot blue pearl granite countered open kitchen or to sit in the more serene back room filled with plants and zen-like decor. Although there seems to be an abundance of seating, the tables are fairly crowded and close together.

Since 1998, Ming has been serving guests his deliciously diverse creations. From petite appetizers, to the ice creams and desserts made in-house by the pastry team, Blue Ginger has something unique for each course.

Popular appetizers include: Bigeye Tuna Poke, curried tomato soup, or the Thai steamed mussels. I ordered the Bigeye Tuna Poke, consisting of tuna tartar on crispy sushi rice with greens and special green sauce ($17). The combination of soft and crunchy was perfect.

Signature dinner items include the Sake-Miso Marinated Alaskan Sablefish and the Garlic-Black Pepper Lobster. I enjoyed the lobster, but even more so the pea tendril salad with tamari ginger vinaigrette to go with it ($42). The seafood tasted fresh and the rice was exploding with a mildly spicy flavor.

Blue Ginger also is a great place for those with food allergies and sensitivities. Ming proudly developed the Food Allergy Reference Book, a system that ensures the safety of guests with allergies. There is also a gluten free menu available.

Although this restaurant tends to be quite pricey, you will definitely get the bang for your buck. Everything on the menu is excellent quality, and the environment is warm and welcoming. From the time you drive through the beautiful suburbs of Wellesley, to your first bite of food, you will consistently be pleased. Make sure to make reservations because it is usually busy all week. See you there!
