On February 23, six of Algonquin’s top skiers traveled to Wachusett Mountain for the Ski Team State Championships. Seniors Andrew Carlucci, Kate Nelligan, and Abbie Reynolds along with juniors Ray Bu and Casey Reynolds and sophomore Shelby Morrison competed at this big event.

The girls team ended the season with a third place finish. Nelligan captured first in the giant slalom race. With only two male representatives and Bu not finishing a race, the boys team did not place.

Coach Wayne Hey said, “[Coaching was] a lot of work. It was tough trying to accomplish certain things but it worked out well and the kids were great.”

Because only the top eighteen skiers in districts could qualify for states, this has been considered as a huge accomplishment for these talented athletes.

“Last year, I finished 35th. This year, I finished 14th in districts so I’m pretty happy about that,” Bu said.

The majority of preparation for the event was done during February break.

“We all do different club teams, so over the break we all were training and racing in courses as well as just free skiing” senior captain Abbie Reynolds said. “ My sister Casey and I skied the trails at Wachusett Mountain to get used to the trails.”

Despite the fact that the skiers raced in individual events, their camaraderie is undeniable.

“We have a lot of depth as a team, and we all have the drive to succeed as individuals but also, as a team,” Reynolds said. “This year, we all had big goals and worked hard all season to fulfill them.”

The overall experience was something to savor for the group.

Senior captain Andrew Carlucci said, “Going to states as a team is so much fun. You see a ton of racers that are amazing. It’s fun to watch and hang out with your friends for the day.”
