Hello everyone, and Happy Halloween!

My name is Jula Utzschneider, and I have just started my sophomore year, which is scary enough as it is. Like a lot of people, I love scary movies: the rush of excitement, chills and screaming every ten seconds.

In this horror movie review blog, The Scariest Things, I will put some of the (supposedly) scariest and best films to the test every other Friday.

My movie selection will include some of the classics, such as “The Shining” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” newer movies like “Get Out” and “The Conjuring” and lesser-known motion pictures such as “Last Shift.”

Throughout this review process, I will be rating each movie in four categories:

Fright Factor: How scary is the movie?

Plot: Is the storyline/script interesting?

Quality: How well is it produced? How good is the acting?

Entertaining: How fun is it to watch?

After scoring each category, I will also be giving the movie an overall score out of ten.

To get started, here’s my list of the five best movies to watch on Halloween:

1. “Scream” (1996): In the horror-mystery genre, this movie is about a mask-wearing psychopath with a knife who stalks high-school students, but the victims aren’t always the most expected. This nail-biter movie is a great choice and perfect for anyone who enjoys gripping stories and sitting on the edge of your seat.

2. “Halloweentown” (1998): This movie, about siblings who find out they come from a family of witches, is great for people who don’t like scary movies. With its original plot and high-energy music, “Halloweentown” is certainly a timeless classic.

3. “Carrie” (1976): This famous adaptation of a Stephen King novel follows Carrie, a bullied and sensitive teen who suspects she has supernatural powers. This cult-classic, with its dark and violent turns, is an excellent movie to watch on Halloween.

4. “Halloween” (1978): This thriller tells the story of Michael Myers, who brutally murdered his 17 year-old sister when he was six. After 15 years in prison, he escapes while being transferred for a court date. An extremely violent and scary movie, “Halloween” will have you kept in suspense while he finds his next victims.

5. “Ghostbusters” (1984):This movie takes place in New York City, where four recently unemployed men decide to become “ghostbusters” that hunt the supernatural for money and must ultimately save their city from complete destruction. A family-friendly movie, “Ghostbusters” is enjoyable for all ages and interests, whether it be sci-fi, comedy or fantasy.

I hope your Halloween weekends are filled with fun and frights!

Be sure to come back on November 13 to see my review of “The Silence of the Lambs.”

Have a happy Halloween!
