Walking down into this underground sushi joint is sure to have guests salivating at the sight of plate upon plate of sushi rolls being delivered around the room.

Conveniently located in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston, Yamato II is a cozy underground restaurant that specializes in sushi. With bar seating, tables and booths customers are sure to be comfortable as they prepare to dig into their dishes.

Known for its All-You-Can-Eat (AYCE) menu, many of the patrons arrive at Yamato with an empty stomach as they are ready to stuff their faces with delicious Japanese delicacies such as sushi, sashimi, and tempura.

The AYCE deal has varying prices including lunch (11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.) ranging from $13.95 to $19.50 on weekdays and $15.95 to $21.50 on weekends. Dinner is after 3 p.m. until close and ranges from $19.95 to $31.99 depending on the day.

The AYCE menu includes many appetizer, maki, sushi and sashimi options along with dessert choices at the end of your meal.

The dishes were brought out in a reasonable timeframe, with plates from the sushi bar coming out before the orders from the kitchen.

The rice in the sushi and maki rolls was nicely seasoned and the rolls were still warm when they arrived to the table. The rolls were all arranged on the same platter within inches of each other. Highlights from my meal were the shrimp tempura and dragon rolls. Both rolls included delicious crispy shrimp tempura with a flavorful eel sauce drizzled on top, yet the dragon roll was  visually different from the shrimp tempura roll with its sliced avocado and fish.

The dishes from the kitchen were served together in a timely manner. Fried dishes such as calamari and pork katsu were perfectly cooked and flavorful without a heavy aftertaste.

With a variety of foods to order from the AYCE menu, it’s hard not to order more than you can eat, but Yamato’s surcharge on leftovers is a great way to keep customers from over ordering.

Not only is the AYCE menu amazing, Yamato also has a wide selection of entrees that can be ordered off a different menu with options such as rice, noodle and teriyaki dishes. With dishes ranging from $4 to $20, patrons can craft a delicious meal without hurting their wallets.

When looking for a reasonably priced light meal in Back Bay, Yamato II is the place to go with its delicious Japanese dishes.
