Senior basketball star Amanda Murphy has shattered expectations and accomplished the incredible milestone of 1000 career points in only three years.

Murphy scored her thousandth varsity point in her last game as a Tomahawk during the third quarter against Westford Academy in the Central Mass. Division 1 semifinals.

Ronald Jones, the varsity girls coach of 21 years, said, “The fact that Amanda was able to score as much as she did, in as little time as she did, is incredible.”

Murphy admits that her success as an individual must be shared with girls she has played with for the past years.

“I loved the team this year.  We really came together.  They deserve most of the credit behind my success,” Murphy said.

Co-Captain Lucy Leblond said, “The team dynamic was great this year.  We all became great friends on and off the court.”

Only four girls at Algonquin have ever scored 1000 points and Murphy is the first to do it in three years.

“The reason behind her success was her unselfishness,” Jones said.

Going into their final game of the season, Jones informed the team on the landmark that Murphy could possibly achieve.  Not only did she break into quadruple digits, but Amanda Murphy finished the game with 25 points, and her career with 1014.

The final game against Westford Academy was a nail-biter.

“The energy was crazy.  Everyone was ecstatic and on their feet,” spectator and Murphy’s brother Tyler Murphy said.  Although the team lost, they rejoiced over their teammate’s triumph.

According to Tyler Murphy, the crowd “went ballistic” when his twin sister’s thousandth point was scored.

“I made sure that the entire Algonquin fan section was well aware of how many points she had,” Tyler Murphy said.

Three of the four players to reach 1000 points were coached by Jones.

Jones said, “Amanda was a very special player, and honestly, I never thought it was possible for her to reach 1000 points.”

Murphy will play basketball next year if she attends Endicott College; otherwise her career as a player will probably come to an end.
