AP courses should be more available to students, less selective

Dear Harbinger Editor,

As November 1st has past us, so has the early action college deadline. However, High school seniors feel a huge relief with their college applications now submitted. Some of us including myself, are already doubting our applications, and wonder what my application was missing. The answer is we will never know exactly what makes an admissions counselors decision but what I do know is my application only has history advanced placement classes. I did not take an AP science or english at a school that offers 21 different AP classes. I can pretty positively say that is not going to help me.

With colleges being ever so selective taking an AP gives you that little extra something you need to stand out in the applicant pool. Unfortunately I was not allowed by Algonquin to take AP environmental, AP english or other AP classes because they require prerequisites from as far back as freshman year. Michael Schaefer, fails to mention this in his article “ Pros and cons of AP overload”. How am I supposed to predict what classes I want to take senior year when I’ve just started my high school career? AP classes should be open to all students like the history department. From my experiences AP History’s have a high success rate on the AP tests. Is Algonquin really telling me that my grade freshman year is a reflection of the coursework I can handle my senior year? Students can’t improve if there school is not even letting them try. Algonquin AP classes should be open to all students not just the top scoring students.
