Thanksgiving and Christmas are not the only holidays worth celebrating. Underrated holidays can be celebrated to continue the festive spirit.

As the holiday season comes to an end, most people start to get a case of the winter blues. Most people think Christmas and New Years are the only holidays that are fun and matter, when really they need to take another look at their calendars. There are plenty of more holidays around the corner that are just as fun and exciting.

1. Groundhog Day, February 2, 2017

Groundhog Day is an underestimated holiday that could have the potential to be something great. Groundhog Day is the possible celebration of the coming spring season. On February 2nd, a groundhog will leave its den and look for it’s shadow. If it sees its shadow, then it will go back to his den for another six weeks of winter. If it doesn’t, then spring has begun. To celebrate this unusual, typically boring holiday, you can start off watching the hilarious movie “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray. “Groundhog Day” is about disillusioned weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) and how he has to relive the same day, Groundhog Day, over and over again until something magical happens. Another way to celebrate is to search for some elusive groundhogs or be the groundhog yourself. Go outside, and see if you see your own shadow or not.

2. Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2017

This holiday may actually seem overrated due to the commercialization surrounding it, but in reality it truly is that great. Taken? Go out with your significant other and have a fun night. Single? That’s still alright. Make the most of this “couple” holiday. Go out to dinner with your friends, or stay in for a movie night. There are infinite possibilities for this “love holiday,” even when you’re not in love. Most importantly, stop at a drug store and treat yourself to some Valentine’s Day candy. From chocolates to truffles to lollipops in pink and red filling store shelves, why not celebrate this lovely holiday with delectable treats that will always put a smile on your face?

3. Presidents’ Day, February 20th, 2017

Presidents’ Day, every social studies teacher’s favorite holiday. Presidents’ Day is a great holiday to mix humor and history into a not your average February day. First, make sure you hit the mall on this day because J.C. Penney and Macy’s have been known for their Presidents’ Day sales. Second, dress up as your favorite president and spend the day pretending to be him. You even could recruit a group of friends to dress up as a president squad, and go out to dinner. Or better yet, hit the sales with your costume on. Lastly, visit a few history museums. It is a historic holiday so why not learn about your country’s history a little bit more? John F. Kennedy Library in Boston is the perfect historic destination to celebrate one of your past presidents.

4. St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2017

St. Patrick’s Day is a classic Bostonian holiday. Every year, Boston has a huge St. Patrick’s Day parade filled with good food, fun, and a crazy celebration of the Irish. The parade starts at the Broadway “T” Station and ends in South Boston. Along with the parade, the whole city of Boston is spirited with many events taking place around Beantown, including shopping, corn beef and hash at local pubs. This year, instead of forgetting about this holiday, throw some green apparel on and go down to the parade to celebrate.
