For those who want to try a new twist on barbecue, look no further than Westboro’s Sapporo Korean BBQ, located in the downtown area on East Main Street. Sapporo is an affordable and delicious option for unique cuisine.

Upon my arrival I was waited on promptly and by friendly hosts who helpfully explained specifics of the restaurant. The host told me that before our meals came out we would receive a platter of traditional Korean side dishes.

While waiting for our drinks I noticed that Sapporo is much bigger than it seems from the outside. The interior has a cool and laid back vibe, with decorations that suggested both traditional and modern art and decor. All the tables are black marble and added to the laid back vibe of the entire place.

From much of the seating the sushi bar is visible and dinner guests can observe the sushi chef making anything from maki to sashimi, showing the dinner guests the authenticity of their cuisine.

Shortly after ordering, we got the much anticipated six Korean side dishes including broccoli, kimchi, and potato salad. The waitress was eager for me to try the traditional Korean kimchi. It looked like a dingy green ribbon covered in red sauce, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was, although definitely spicy, it was bursting with deep soy flavors.

My main entree was a bibimbap bowl, pronounced bee-bim-bop ($12.95), which comes in a bowl and has rice, veggies, korean style beef and is topped off with a jiggly fried egg. The portions are on the larger side, so I felt I got the full bang for my buck.

The food had bold flavors that complimented each other. None of it too overpowering but none of it too dull. The korean style beef was my favorite part of the meal. It’s beef that has been cut incredibly thin and is marinated in a rich sauce with that gives the meat tones of soy sauce, ginger, and sesame.

From the pleasant and helpful service to the incredible meal, I’m hooked. If you’re looking to expand your palette, check out Sapporo.
