With a gripping plot and thrilling survival scenes, “The Martian” (2015) exceeds all other sci-fi films.

The Oscar-winning film is based on and very loyal to the novel by Andy Weir, which was published in 2011.

The movie, directed by Ridley Scott, illustrates the tale of the witty Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, who is left behind on the planet Mars by his astronaut team after they presume him dead following a ravaging storm. Watney must survive with dwindling supplies and apply his perseverance and knowledge of science and agriculture to solve challenges he faces.

Meanwhile, on Earth, the NASA team persists in forming a rescue mission as soon as possible to save the stranded scientist before he starves to death. At the same time, the oblivious astronaut crew that is on its way home mourns the loss of their fellow Earthling.

The plot is packed with riveting moments and steadily accelerates to the climax, which is sure to leave audience members tingling with astonishment. A unique aspect that makes the story especially dynamic is how Watney narrates his solutions for the problems he encounters. He does this by keeping a video diary of his time on Mars clearly expressing his struggle to the audience.

Jordan’s desert landscapes that were used for “The Martian” firmly mimic Mars’s terrain. The reddish rock and tall mounds combined with the murky lighting convince viewers that the film was actually filmed on our neighboring planet, which is different from how many sci-fi films rely solely on green screens.

Along with the picturesque scenery, the soundtrack of “The Martian” is vivid. The music jumps from resonant sci-fi themes to frisky disco tunes, which evokes dynamic emotions in viewers.

The movie is also intensified by the talented actors’ emotions. Viewers can sense all the feelings of the characters, from Watney’s determination, to the NASA team’s fatigue in creating a rescue plan as soon as possible, and to the astronauts’ despair in leaving their friend behind.

At first glance, the film seems like it is purely for entertainment purposes, yet along with being a captivating story, “The Martian” has a moral to be taken away. Through Watney’s solutions to strenuous predicaments, the film shows that though we may encounter unexpected hardships in our lives, it is necessary to persevere and do our best.
