Meaning behind the ink: tattoos’ significance misunderstood, criticized

Dear Editors of The Harbinger,

In the most recent edition (February 2017) of The Harbinger, the article “All inked up,” written by Owen Lyons, was a comforting change from the average discussions about tattoos. Throughout recent years, tattoos have often had a negative connotation attached to them, and telling someone you have a tattoo is often met with a look of disdain or judgement. Allowing the students who have gotten tattoos to explain their reasoning behind their ink and the meaning behind it is something nice to see. Not only did you explain the meaning behind the tattoos, but you also interviewed the students with the tattoos which was a great addition to the article. Interviewing them allowed them to explain the meaning whereas during the day they might be judged for having a tattoo.

I encourage more articles like this in the future because it is something new and different surrounding the world of tattoos. More articles like this will encourage more students to receive tattoos and express themselves in ways which they see fit. Students with tattoos always search for an outlet to explain their tattoos to the populace and seeing an outlet in the most recent edition of The Harbinger was a nice sight.

Sincerely,

Colin Galligan
